Land Recognition
We have a responsibility to not only acknowledge but also elevate Native communities and their needs. This project sits in the area currently known as Portland, which encompasses the traditional village sites of the Multnomah, Wasco, Cowlitz, Kathlamet, Clackamas, Bands of Chinook, Tualatin Kalapuya, Molalla, and many other tribes who made their homes along the Columbia River.
Educating ourselves is an important action. We encourage you to explore the stories of these communities through Native-led resources like David G. Lewis, PhD’s The Quartux Journal and Leading with Tradition.

Modernizing the Campus Dining Experience
The Lewis & Clark College Fields Dining Hall project required remodeling a 9,500 sq. ft. dining facility. One project priority was to ensure the dining hall better met the needs of the student body and food management organization during peak times. They also wanted the facility to be a highlight for prospective students touring the college.

Enhanced Atmosphere
A new wood ceiling improves acoustics during busy times, baffling sound while accentuating the existing arched glulam beams. The reorganization of the serving area provides better flow while still providing flexibility for future programmatic or operational changes.

A Welcoming Entrance
The existing entrance, previously hidden behind trees, was modified into an identifiable and welcoming entry. An enlarged west window provides additional daylighting of the space.

Improved Flow
A new serpentine wall separates the servery from the dining area and creates a continuous flow while juxtaposing the existing exposed structure.
