Land Recognition

We have a responsibility to not only acknowledge but also elevate Native communities and their needs. This project is adjacent to the University of Massachusetts Amherst, which was founded and built on the unceded homelands of the Pocumtuc Nation, called “Nonotuck” or “Norwottuck.” The Pocumtuc people were displaced by colonization.

Educating ourselves is an important action. We encourage you to explore the history of Nonotuck via Historic Northampton.

Modern Living Near UMass

Kendrick Place is a privately developed housing tailored to students near the University of Massachusetts. The building houses 36 units, providing space for 104 beds. The project site is a gateway between the city’s urban commercial storefront district and the University of Massachusetts campus. Holst designed Kendrick Place to respond to the area, providing a link between the university and downtown.

Inspired Façade

With respect to Amherst’s traditional material palette, Kendrick features red brick and cedar to fit in contextually with the existing buildings. The brick façade is broken down into smaller bays to reflect the city’s smaller building modules. The triangular-shaped site inspired the building’s acute triangular corners, reminiscent of New York’s Flatiron Building.

Bright, Inviting Architecture

The brick façades feature small punched openings, while the building’s corners provide glassy lanterns to convey a lighter framework language. One of the lanterns was turned and opened up to create an on-site courtyard where students can gather.

Design Catered to Students

The unique apartments were tailored to fit students’ lifestyles, with 9+ ft ceilings, large windows, balconies, modern kitchens, and sound attenuation.

This is the best place to live in Amherst for students/professionals who want upscale apartments.

How do I become an architect? What is the difference between Architecture and Engineering? Can I job shadow an architect for a day? How do architects turn designs into buildings? Can I tour your office with my child? What roles can I perform in architecture? How do I know if architecture is the field for me? Would an architect speak to my class about architecture? What degrees do I need to be an architect?

Holst invites curious minds to ask questions about architecture.
