Breaking boundaries.

Developed by the nonprofit educational organization Open School, Open School East is an innovative new school model that prepares students for success in college, career and community. Over recent years, Open School has seen a dramatic shift in its student population within Multnomah County—historically located in North Portland, the organization is now finding a greater need to serve the outer-eastside of Portland.

In an effort to better serve this changing student population, the new 21,000 sf Open School East will serve grades 7-12 at the crossroads of Portland and Gresham in the Rockwood Neighborhood. The architecture reinforces the school's model of learning: it provides space for opportunity. The new Open School East will ensure that underserved youth in the area have safe and inspiring places to learn, play, and socialize.

Open Meadow

A cascading bleacher stair in the central space connects both floors, seats 200 people, and is intended to host a wide range of impromptu activities.

Advocacy, Equity, and Academics

The space seeks to inspire community, spark learning, and aims to reengage youth with their academics.

The design of the building reinforces the school's model of support and openness. It provides 11 classrooms, two science labs, an art studio, and administrative spaces arranged on two floors around the double-height gathering space.
