Hotel Modera

View Images

Hotel Modera is the renovation of a 1960's motor lodge into a 176-room boutique hotel in downtown Portland. Holst sought to revive the simple Modern aesthetics of the original structure, while supporting the pedestrian friendly culture of the city—transforming it into a lively urban gathering destination.

The renovation deemphasizes the car while providing a unique public courtyard along SW 6th Avenue. Ground level surface parking was reclaimed and redesigned into a new landscaped entry courtyard, restaurant and bar, and a more inviting hotel lobby. The courtyard provides the neighborhood and guests with a dynamic outdoor space that is activated well into the night.

Embracing the past

Updated exterior surfaces showcase the structure's original simplicity.

Hotel Modera

A space for all

A new extension of the lobby blurs the boundaries of interior and exterior spaces to invite the public in.

The courtyard includes a living wall, fire pits, and plenty of seating for hotel guests and locals alike. The living wall is planted in a vertical manner and integrates steel from the fire pits as well as the vegetation from the courtyard.
